Audrey Wood’s ‘Piggies’ begins with full double page spreads featuring a child’s hand. The hands first become visible with extended thumbs with eccentric little porkers perched on the thumbs.

Accordingly commences one of the more durable of children’s works providing pleasure for Osage County First Grade Little Readers.

The digits on the right launches a well got up portly fellow; top hat, bumbershoot and tails, while on the left is seen a self-effacing little, back up, reshape, chunky gal armed with picnic fixins

’. What is more, the left hand discloses an extended forefinger hoisting a rather bookish fellow at the apex. He is sitting on a tome where bedecked in thick horn rims, he is pouring over a weighty volume.

As each folio is turned reader’s notice the preceding pigs in addition to a burgeoning number of companions who are joining the fun.

From extended, to chubby, to droll, to impractical; the congregation develops; the associate with the top hat analyzes, while the reader preserves his reading and the picnic becomes a feast of bananas, strawberries and even snow balls.

There are miniature piggies, scorching piggies, chilly piggies, gleaming piggies, grubby little piggieswell-mannered piggies, but not at bedtime when they ‘skip down to my tummy, and boogie on my toes’.

Before long the piggies run away to hide until the child puts pajama clothed piggies in a procession for kisses.

And oh, those kisses. There are chunky kisses, neat kisses, expanded kisses, ridiculous kisses and minuscule kisses.

They live in Santa Barbara, California. Don wood was born and raised on a farm in the San Joaquin Valley of California. His father ran the family farm and his mother was an elementary school teacher. It was in the sixth grade, that Don definitely decided he wanted to be an artist. Perhaps there is a correlation. Since Don was so busy during the summers, winter was his time to draw.
