As we enter its fourth year, the reality of the Trump administration can best be described as embarrassing, incoherent, deceitful, dishonest, disloyal, and dogmatic. 

•   It is embarrassing in that President Trump is a pathological liar, having told the US and the world more than 16,000 documented and fact-checked lies. It is unlikely that any human being in world history has ever uttered a verbal record that so completely rejects reality as we know it. The fact that he has also escaped being removed from office bespeaks an inherent weakness in our ability to cleanse ourselves from such an improbable and disreputable environment. 
•  It is incoherent in that the great majority of US residents know and understand how incredulous and how difficult it is to suffer through such an extended period that is out-of-touch with reality while the perpetrator continues to blither his babble unrestrained, voicing astounding exclamations such as believing he is a genius. Is this not a certain sign of megalomania?
• It is deceitful in that he has assembled a cadre of cabinet members and agency heads who are loyal to and support someone whose mental facilities are so clearly in conflict with our Constitution, our laws, and with common sense. In the immortal words of Patrick Henry, “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”
• It is dishonest for the great majority of his political party members to stand their ground in silence as he assaults our collective sensibility of decency, honor, and truth.
•  It is also disloyal to our Constitution, to our heritage, to our children, and to our posterity to not speak out against the tyrannical absurdities that flow so effluently from his mouth.
• And finally, the fact that he insists on loyalty over trustworthiness is an affront to the moral code of every human being who can deal with reality in rational, measured ways. 

If history is the final  judge of ourselves and our times, how can we escape its verdict?  We are guilty of not protecting ourselves and all that we cherish, for giving aid and comfort to the enemies from within, and for not defending our simple rejoinder to honor “liberty and justice for all.” How sad the tale. As the poet, Omar Khayyam, reminded us: “The moving finger writes; and, having writ, moves on: nor all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all thy tears wash out a word of it. "

Ours is a binary choice:  We must correct this blunder, or live in shame.  There is no middle ground.
