Devotional 1 – Worldly Distraction

Be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind so that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

Everyday on my drive to work I am intrigued by the haves and the have nots. Sometimes I fret over what someone else has that I don’t. Yet when I pass someone waiting at a bus stop as I drive by in my vehicle I have to give Glory to God for his goodness. In that moment I was distracted by worldly material gain, but God has already blessed me with everything I need. In that moment my focus was on what the world could give me. But will those things help me achieve eternal life? Will those things bring me to a closer relationship with God? Will material gains bring lifelong fulfillment? No, for the bible says in Matthew 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves break through and steal. What good are fancy cars and homes when they break down, rust, and get destroyed from years of use and abuse? I want more than things I want a relationship with God. Therefore I am challenged to renew my mind by focusing on God’s perfect will.

In our daily walk we must focus more on what we’ve been given and less on what we can obtain. God already knows what we can handle. God already knows what’s best for us so why do we continue to ask for things that we will only use and soon discard? For God’s will is perfect if we’ll just allow him to have his way. For it states in Jeremiah 29:11; "For I know the plans I have for you", says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." Now if we could just let go of what we think we need and believe that God gives what we deserve we would all be a better people.

Prayer of faith:

Father, I come before thee asking you to cleanse my heart, mind and soul of worldly gain and need. Remind me Lord of your perfect will and allow me to realize that all I have is from you. Help me to cling to your word and your promises as I embark on each new day as your child. Forgive me from coveting what I cannot or do not have, and allow me to trust that in due season you will give me the desires of my heart. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen!
