 What You Didn’t Know…

Nuts

Can you name a list of nuts? Most people can’t. In fact, most people would include a list of items that are not nuts. Isn’t that nuts. For the record pecans, sweet chestnuts, beech, acorns, hazel, hornbeam and alders are all nuts. Peanuts on the other hand is a legume and is in the same family as soy beans, black beans, lima beans, and well…beans. Yes, my dear peanuts are more of a bean than a nut. Which makes sense because beans come in a pod as do peanuts. Pistachios, cashews, pine nuts, and horse chestnuts are actually seeds and not nuts. You’re shocked, aren’t you? Well, don’t go nuts over legumes, seeds, and nuts. Instead chill out and have a nutty snack (unless of course you’re allergic then leave those nuts (legumes, seeds)) alone.

I thought that all nuts were seeds. If I planted a walnut, it wouldn't turn into a walnut tree? My grandparents grew peanuts and we got them out of the ground. So while they are related to beans, they are more like a potato. And they may be seeds as well, because if you plant a portion of a potato that is sprouting, it will grow a potato plant. So a potato is a seed. But I have never seen a left alone peanut sprout.

George Washington Carver took the lowly peanut and made it a household necessity. I recall in my youth I thought that the kids who ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were getting less nutrition than I with my lunchmeat and lettuce sandwiches. Turns out I was wrong, with peanut butter providing more nutrition than lunchmeat.

We wouldn't have had one of our best presidents, Jimmy Carter, without the peanut.

Thanks for pointing these things out to us. It never hurts to learn more. I try to keep up with all that's happening all the time and the Internet sure helps clarify things.
