Why Whiny Men Ain't Sexy

For those of you who didn't know, on April 25, 2005 my husband and lover of close to 30 years, Kenny, just had a radical prostatectomy (sparing nerves on the right side, hopefully they'll work again!). Prostate cancer kills men, especially the chocolate men. But my theory is their recovery will kill their wives.

Here's a bit of satire that I'll be working on. . . so step into my world with a personal note I wrote to a friend of mine who is an herbalist.

Yes, I love my husband, but when he says the washcloth I use on him irritates his skin, and that the 19 staples ache and itch between his belly button and his definition of machismo just when he moves, and he refuses to have me help him until he's in a fix so bad that if I don't run and jump on demand, he's ready to have his last will and testament read. . . you'll see that this letter is coming from, shall we say. . . the diary of a mad black midlife wife.

Hey Sis!:

Things are so far from the norm, but at least the finals are over. Now I need some rest.

Washing him up, trying to get him to eat right. Cooking some dandelion greens I got from Meijers in Richmond, next door to the college. They look like the garden of Eden exploded in their produce dept. Got some spearmint leaves, collards, all fresh. Drying the mint leaves for tea just to perk ME up!

Tried to get him to eat a meal replacement. As tired as I am, he asked me to fry him some potatoes. I said no, this is ridiculous when you have all this healthy stuff, like the homemade cabbage and carrot with turkey stew I made with turkey that I roasted so I wouldn't have to work so hard getting meals that were fast food (he loves fast food.)

I ask, "you want a sandwich"? and he says fry potatoes!!! I didn't do it. He had a hissy fit when I said I wouldn't put butter salt on the popcorn. Butter salt is a museum piece now in the cabinet and when he's well enough to get around again, I'm hiding ALL of the salt. I think I'll donate it to the church or the shelter, or someplace!

]

Kenny's cardiologist said "NO MORE ADDED SALT! I don't use salt any more. I can't say what Kenny does when I'm not around. I broke down and got him some low sodium bacon just so I could rest my eardrums. Gave him a printed article from WebMD that said prostate cancer occurs seemingly more with red meat and dairy product eaters. I spend time in the stores getting Kashi cereal, even the kind that tastes like honey nut cheerios. He eats part of it and says, "Don't buy this stuff again." What am I supposed to do, prepare myself for widowhood?

He's dropped off from being diligent about his supplements too. Look at what they did to the Double X Vitamins. They may even have a picture of the vitamins on the page, that you can just go ahead and click on once you get to that site. The picture changes like a billboard everytime you log on.  But read the ingredients, they blew me away! Plus they made them SMALLER, even smaller than some prescript drug pills like Norvasc that Kenny takes for his blood pressure.

I'm so into him that I forget my own vitamins, don't drink tea like I used to. Nervousness has shaved about 4-5 pounds off of me last week alone. He's too hot, too cold, won't eat because he doesn't like something, I'm at my wits end. Going to a Transcendental Meditation intro course my friend Vicki Peterson is giving. Soon she'll be doing Ayur Vedic massages at her clinic. Guess who's gonna be one of her first clients!?!?!

My whole body feels like I'm wearing the Prudential Insurance Rock on my back. My left ankle is hurting, I'm having trouble concentrating, and for once I think I understand why God designed women to live longer than men.  There's also a possibility that in the fall 2005 I can teach writing basics at Ivy Tech in Richmond. They say I'm not qualified to teach public speaking because I don't have enough communication hours. They have a Brother for the Language Arts chair, so I know that he's gotta watch his back in "Walka-Tightrope Land" or he could become an ethnic deduction from their budget.  But at least he asked me if I was interested in  the writing. He can vouch for me that way because of the journalism major.

Now that shows you how silly some colleges can be with their rules. Indiana University says I'm qualified. . . Ivy Tech State College says I'm not. My students are all satified and the ones who passed (about 90 percent of them in both classes) tell me how much they apppreciate me and how I relate to them, and how much they've learned and improved.

So much for Ivy Tech speaking class. But maybe it's a way that God is opening up a door in a writing world. I might need to meet someone I otherwise would not have met. Gotta look at things that way now.

Do I sound dissed or what???

love, cynth'ya

p.s. There he goes moaning again, wants me to put a bit of olive oil on the end of his machismo where the cathether is. And people wonder why men don't have babies.

Frank, refreshing and whimsically articulate! I don't normally hang out in the 'Women' section but I stumbled across this and took a look....and enjoyed it. Good on ya, Sheila! ["Whiney" never cut it in my book either, whether of the XX or the XY type.] As an old, old, ancient joke goes in the military, "Minds are like parachutes; they only work when they're open." -K2
