What my eyes have seen…

Is a man claiming to be the father of the child singer Madonna adopted from Burundi on televison. He was saying that he didn’t understand the contract he signed for his son’s adoption.

He thought the contract said that Madonna was simply taking his son to raise, and then she would send him home.

Why would anyone with any SEMBLANCE OF SANITY think that?

I know you’re saying, “But they’re from another culture, Wendi. Maybe that’s the way they do things in Burundi.”

Maybe so.

“So maybe you shouldn’t be so harsh on him.”

I think not.

“He probably doesn’t even know who she is.”

I doubt that.

I’ll tell you what I think happened...

He probably didn’t know who she was when all the commotion started. But, believe if you want to that he doesn’t know who she is NOW—

And I’ve got a bridge to sell you for about one trillion dollars…

In any case, here’s Madonna, trying to be a good world citizen, trying to do the right thing. She probably had heard about the 900,000 orphans in Burundi, and was so moved that she wanted to do something to help. She probably thought that by adopting a child herself, she’d bring much needed visibility to the situation.

I can understand that. When I read the story, I was so moved that I wrote about it (see my article entitled ‘900,000’). I scanned the Internet for ways to donate to help the cause.

So, in my opinion, even if Madonna adopted the child for personal publicity, it was still a DECENT thing to do.

And, here’s this father—his son’s mother has died of AIDS, and he gives the baby to an orphanage to raise. The easy way out.

Maybe that IS the way of his culture. That part doesn’t matter.

What does matter is that he got onto international television and had the nerve to say that he thought a world renowned figure would take his child, raise him in the lap of luxury, and send him back to HIM to live in UTTER POVERTY. Madonna reported that the boy had pneumonia, so she had to travel with a physician to treat him before she took him out of Burundi, because the orphanage didn’t have the proper medicine for his condition!

Well!

I hope all works out well for Madonna, and her new son. I pray that her attorneys can help this father understand what an opportunity this is for his son…and that he will work with them, instead of against them…

Still, I can’t help but think…

If my child was suffering and motherless, and someone came along and offered him the chance to live a lifestyle most humans can only dream of—a chance I would not be able to offer him in my lifetime…

I don’t know about most of you, but I would be so GRATEFUL that I’d be begging for a chance to see him every now and again—so I could have a taste of that life too. And, I’d be on my knees, THANKING GOD that my child was the one rescued from that orphanage!

My LAST thought would be about having him sent back, because frankly, if I cared for him that much in the first place, he wouldn’t have been sitting in an orphanage at 13 months old, DYING FROM PNEUMONIA!

Need I say more?

Yes, I do.

What these eyes have seen here, is simply beyond belief.
