"Most human beings have an almost infinite capacity for taking things for granted." - Aldous Huxley

A chief worry we should be aware of are infections---in not so obvious and of all places a hospital. In a New England Journal of Medicine report, infections acquired by patients staying in the hospital resulted in an estimated 90,000 deaths a year. Another alarming estimate is the cost: $9.5 billion in medical bills. Those statistics are alarming and concerning, yes indeed.

But you won’t believe one of the infection sharing culprits. Yes, the common TV remote controls in patients' rooms in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

So what should be your infection control program? TV Abstinence for one. In another interesting recent study by University of Arizona, researchers wrote that the TV remote control in a hospital room is THE item to be a disease carrier or host -causing bacteria (including drug-resistant strains).

The innocent TV control, handled by many, easily trumped the toilet and faucet handles, bathroom door, and other more obvious suspects you probably suspected. So what’s the best prevention? Never touch or use the TV remote control—there are enough germs as it is to spread around.

Preventing the spread of infections is up to you and essential for your safety and that of your loved ones.

Myles,

Potentially life saving information here, excellently penned. Well done.

I have been the victim of a hospital acquired infection. Not fun.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

The key thing is making sure the medical personnel wash their hands, wash their hands, wash their hands!!!!!

Good stuff, Myles! Here's a good opportunity for electronic inovators to develop and sell a TV or a remote system that requires NO MORE THAN THE WAVE OF A HAND to change channels up or down! It's SICKENING that hospital authorities haven't discovered this culprit, and worked to eleminate it and the causes! ! ! - Bill
