We all learn through experience for the most part; continuously educating ourselves about the craft we have chosen for ourselves. Writing is as much a part of me as breathing; and my love for the written word, especially when backed up with knowledge and integrity, is a big component to who I am. Personally, I write about what I know; not always biographical, but often based on some of the fundamental life experiences I've traveled as well as those roads that others have followed. I believe myself to be a storyteller; not so much a literary master; or one who insists on perfection in the style I've chosen for myself. Just as I know who I am as a writer, the learning process is continuous as I learn more about myself and the subjects I write about. With time; I realize that I must also get to know who and what I am dealing with when it comes to attracting attention to my book(s).
Quickly after publication of my highly acclaimed spiritual book, EXTRAORDINARY VISITS, Miracles through Divine Intervention, (www.Amazon.com/lindalaw, www.Barnes & Noble.com/lindalaw, www.Literarymastersinc.com, www.Outskirtspress.com/extraordinaryvisits, www.Authorsden.com/lindalaw, www.Myspace.com/lindalaw, www.associatedcontent.com/lindalaw), it became evident to me that not only would I be responsible for promoting my work, I would also have to gain the attention of book reviewers and journalists. My publisher reminds me regularly of ways to better promote myself/book, and gives suggestions on how to go about that process. I have taken the liberty of passing along some of those suggestions; although not in direct quotes. The bottom line is this, and it should hit home with you.. If no one knows about me and/or my book(s); no one will buy my book....it's as simple as that!
It was brought to my attention by other professionals that those who work in media are people too; and they have problems, families, jobs, deadlines as well. If I want them to know me, then I should learn about them...that sounds quite fair to me, and a positive way to better understand what and who I'm dealing with.
Once I have selected a journalist to write about my book/subject, I must read EVERYTHING they write. Conduct research, such as a Google search for their name and read their articles. Make notations about recent subjects they have covered in previous articles. It is much better to come across as a "fan" rather than a pest or one who stalks them for attention.
Most journalists have websites, podcasts, and blogs of their own, so it's important that you subscribe to them! Get to know them as regular people with their own beliefs and interests. Getting to know them on a personal level will be helpful and you won't come across as just hitting on them for a review or interview, etc. You should casually mention that you are a published author, and that generally will give them the concept that you are a source and not just the stalker mentioned above.
Send them information about the topic they cover in order to give credence that you are a source. It is important to note that it's best not to pitch your book every time you contact them; instead send them something newsworthy about what you have read or heard that they may be interested in. If they begin to value communication with you, you will be much closer to a time when you can pitch your story. Naturally, if an opportunity arises, and it can anytime... please do not hesitate to give it your best presentation! Who knows...this could be the perfect time for you to connect in a positive way. Good luck with your efforts; however, do not become discouraged..this will be an ongoing process.
Everyone works differently, yet these tips have been passed along by experienced professionals who believe they are important steps to attracting the attention of media. Whenever professionals in the field of writing/authors/publishing/promoting offer valuable suggestions, it is only to my advantage to follow their advice. If I don't try, I'll never know if my book(s) will be noticed by a journalist who can assist me in writing about my work! The possibilities are endless...
Will you be my agent?
