Most authors and poets and wordsmiths tend to rely on their MUSE for inspiration.
Sometimes there are lean periods when the ideas just seem to dry up and evade us. Other times a mere spark begins to slowly glow and Voila ! Ignition occurs spontaneously !
Recently, I thought about Music. Somebody writes some words down - Lyrics - and either that same person, or maybe later, another person creates a melody and assigns Notes to those Lyrics.
I thought about the thousands upon thousands of Songs that have been written, set to music, and finally recorded.
Radio - hundreds of stations, both FM & AM - Television - theme songs - Movies - theme songs and background music - Internet - many Apps like YouTube and Pandora - CD’s - both Audios & Videos - Discs - Magnetic Tapes - a voluminous collage of beautiful sounds - all available to us at our beck and call.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC !!!
Then I thought about all those millions upon millions of Words.
Without doing any technical research whatsoever, I would guess that a greater majority of them were put to Rhyme, and therefore are actually Poetry.
Then consider the themes of all those thousands of songs. Would I be far wrong to guesstimate that maybe 90 % or upwards were LOVE SONGS ?

In ending this barrage of Love, an old poem just popped into my feeble brain:
“There’s the love of a Father, and the love of a Mother, love of a Sister, and even a Brother - but the love that is purest and sweetest is that of One Dead Drunk to Another!”

Funny that you should post this. I have taken to pulling out my partner's iPad and listening to old songs. You're right, probably 90% are love songs. There is a simple reason. Young people have disposable income and buy new releases. Their hormones are raging and their relationships are often in difficulty. Most people these days divorce regardless of the amazing love they had when they got married. So love songs become the hoped-for or describe perfectly the loss.
You are also right about rhyming. While rappers tend to be more angry rather than loving, they use a lot of rhyme because it tends to become lyrical, like song. And repetition seems to work more in lyrics than it does in poetry. Some songs are so repetitious that they have only 3 or 4 words in the whole song like, "All I am saying, is give peace [love] a chance."
