A lot of people have been telling me for many years now that we are well on our way to a ‘No Kill Nation.’ Yet, every year when I sadly look at the statistics, I know that this is not the case. For some reason, ‘Spay and Neuter’ has never been a priority in this nation, and until it is, millions of America’s innocent, unwanted, unloved pets will continue to be euthanized, each and every year.

A) Ten years ago, 90 percent of the 15,000 plus pets that we rescued on the devastated Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina were not spayed or neutered.
B) Today, 10 years later, 90 percent of the pets that we rescue from the mean city streets are still not spayed or neutered. (None of my own dogs and cats were spayed or neutered when I rescued them).
C) Puppy Mills continue to mass produce puppies in nearly every state in America, and people continue to buy them.
D) Backyard Breeders continue to mass produce both dogs and cats in nearly every state in America, and people continue to buy them.
E) Because animal shelters all across America are all overflowing with unwanted pets, some shelters are now even horrendously adopting out dogs and cats that have not yet been spayed or neutered. (One of my own neighbors just adopted a dog from a local shelter that was not neutered prior to adoption.)
F) Homeless unwanted feral cats continue to multiply in every state in America, and very few cities and towns in America even have TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) programs in place.
G) Ten years ago, nearly 60 percent of the animals that entered U.S. animal shelters were euthanized; today, that percentage has not changed much – nearly 60 percent of animals that enter U.S. animal shelters today are still being euthanized.
H) It is estimated that approximately 2.4 million healthy dogs and cats are being euthanized in U.S. shelters, each and every year (about 1 every 13 seconds) – and this horrid number is not going down.

Can anyone tell me how in the world they still believe that we are heading for a ‘No Kill Nation?’ Can anyone tell me why so many people refuse to spay and neuter their own pets, when so many Free and Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinics offer these services to pet owners nationwide? And can anyone tell me why we as a nation continue to allow abysmal Puppy Mills and Backyard Breeders to continue to operate and to mass produce pets today?

Please Spay and Neuter Your Own Pets. Please Ask Every Pet Owner You Know To Do The Same. I Very Sadly Know That We Will Never Be a ‘No Kill Nation’ in My Lifetime; and I Very Sadly Know That We Will Never Be ‘No Kill’ Anytime In The Future, Unless Spay and Neuter Becomes a Nationwide Priority.
