The Month of June is 'Adopt A Cat Month'

The Perfect Time To Adopt A Cat

Although I’ve spent a lot of my time over the last decade attempting to rescue abandoned dogs from the mean city streets, I am also a life-long cat lover. And as I wander around America these days, I very sadly see more and more homeless cats out on our streets, and finding anyone to adopt a homeless cat today is even more difficult than finding someone to adopt a homeless dog.

To address this enormous problem, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), The American Humane Association (AHA) and many other animal welfare organizations across the United States now designate the month of June as ‘Adopt-A-Cat Month.’

Each and every spring during ‘kitten season,’ thousands of newborn felines now join the millions of homeless cats already out on our streets and in our animal shelters all across the nation.

And June is the perfect month for Adopt-A-Cat Month, since this year's newborn kittens are already at an adoptable age, and our already overcrowded animal shelters have so many older cats that still need homes in order to make room for the never-ending strays and homeless felines still very sadly in need of some help.

“Spring and summer are the times of year when animal shelters are all over-flowing with cats of all ages, sizes, and colors,” says the President and CEO of the ASPCA. “We want to help raise awareness of this in order to bring home the reality that thousands of cats need safe and loving new homes, right now. By adopting a feline friend, not only are you giving a shelter cat a second chance at life, but you will also gain a lifelong companion who will bring many years of love and devotion to your family.”

Please find it in your heart to visit your local animal shelter this month – ‘Adopt-A-Cat Month’ - and give at least one deserving feline – a second chance - and a brand new lease on life.

For Ron Hull: In a perfect world, I would agree with you. But a perfect world would not have we hideously cruel human beings in it. Today, people poison cats; they shoot them; they torture them for fun; and they haul them off to 'Kill Shelters' where thousands and thousands of innocent cats are put to sleep every year. Even many so called 'cat lovers' today are not doing them any favors. Many cat owners don't bother to get their own pet cats spayed and neutered, and they allow them to roam outdoors, where they either impregnate or get pregnant themselves, only adding to the massive cat overpopulation problem in our country. When I rescue a cat from the streets, I take it to a vet, have it spayed or neutered, and allow it to live indoors with us. None of our former street orphan felines miss having to scavenge for their own food in the bitterly cold winter or miss being tormented by cat hating people they encounter out on the streets, as can be seen in my poem today: "Ode To My Cat Woman."

Not to disparage your fine and good intentions, but no amount of doing good is going to correct the problem. We have become a society of consuming and discarding. We consume for frivolous reasons because we "like" something and then we just as easily discard it because we can easily obtain another and then discard that as well. Pets have become consumer products like toys that we can childishly leave out on the lawn in rain and snow. Until we can educate people that animals are very much like us with needs and emotions and suffer when being abused, the problem will continue.

My next-door neighbors are fond of cats and, I believe, are continually taking in strays. These cats regularly invade my backyard as their territory to hunt for the birds that we try to bring to our birdfeeder. They may also do some good by catching the numerous cockroaches that populate our fair city. I wish I didn't have to see them stalking in my yard and doing their business in my flower beds, but that's what cats do.

In spite of your concern for cats, I truly believe that long after we are gone and the rats are feeding on our carcasses, cats will be doing just fine, because rats are a favorite food of theirs.

Ron
