My sentiments exactly. And thank you for looking up statistics, while old and hard to get with any accuracy, partly because some of them are blocked by the powers that be.

Lethal guns in the household, locked up or not, are much more dangerous than home invasion by criminals. Calling 911 is a much safer alternative.

I don't understand how children get a hold of weapons.Where are the adults ? Why are these guns lying around where kids can play with them and shoot others? I think a lot of the problem with the kids today is because all the violence they have in the games that they play all the time. They become immune to killing In fact in some games you get extra points if you kill certain types of people. These kids don't play anymore outside sports. They stay indoors and xbox rules their lives and they shoot and kill for hours with no partental intervention.

The worst (yes, deaths and injuries are lamentable ... but) result of so many guns and the encouragement to use them over damn little provocation is that we have lost the ability to talk to each other, to listen, to put ourselves in another person's position ... empathy. We've lost the language, the emotional maturity and in far too many cases even the willingness to compromise, extend understanding beyond our own tribe. And the tribe gets smaller and smaller until only the loner gunman can save the world ... his tool of choice is a gun that shoots hundreds of times. Fortunately the 2nd Amendment did not include nuclear weapons in its language, although some would extend it that far if they could lay their hands on one or more. Lost in this lack of conversation is the understanding that the 2nd Amendment was, in large part, put into the Bill of Rights because slave owning states wanted to arm their Slave Patrols (well regulated militias)in order to terrorize their 'property' ... slavery no longer legal, the need for guns has lost its legitimacy.
