My husband and I were watching a documentary called "Escape from Jonestown” last night.
I was 18 when I learned about the horrors that took place in Jonestown, Guyana; home of the People’s Temple. Until then I’d never heard of a cult, let alone understand the concept of why they exist. I was raised in Seminole, Florida-a small town along the Gulf of Mexico. Such things were not part of my world.
There were murdered journalists and an assassinated Congressman. Families were separated as a few managed to escape by plane or into the jungle. Those who remained were forced or willingly succumbed to a fate that the manic mind of Jim Jones had chosen for them. Koolaid laced with cyanide. A child’s drink.
On November 18, 1978, 909 people died. A third of them were children.
Most like me had never seen this sort of thing before. Most of us didn’t think it was possible.
The sign that hung above the dead body of Reverend Jim Jones read "Those Who Cannot Remember the Past Are Condemned to Repeat It."
Eerily prophetic.
As I read daily comments on Facebook, and witness the dangerously foolish actions of voters and misinformed Christians who have lost the ability to think for themselves, I'm chilled.
Jonestown is an example of what can occur when people blindly submit to a charismatic leader without asking questions or following their instincts.
What's happening in today's world feels the same, only on a much larger scale. Clearly many can't remember the past. I guess the rest of us know what can come next without a course correction.
Matthew 7:15 says: "Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”
Indeed.
