What’s Your Vision of Your “Better Self?”
Dedicated to those times when we are wishing to embrace another mind set, e.g., wanting to be more present in the here and now, wanting to feel more grateful and content; but find that our logical mind and our good intentions are over-ruled by a more powerful program… and we go back (yet again) to the well-trotted pathways in our mind…
“For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.” (Romans 7:15; KJV).
What attachments keep pulling at you?
What emotional patterns are you trotting?
What visions dance in your dreams?
Our subconscious “soft-drives” are compiled out of numerous (often unconsciously) internalized images, attachments, and beliefs; and are powerful in reinforcing how we experience our moment to moment reality.
Often we may find ourselves being pulled along their well-established links, replaying over and again those ideas, expectations, hopes, and beliefs that we have built the biggest attachments around.
“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate,” suggested Jung.
Visualization can be a helpful technique, through which we can take control of the programming of our “soft-drive,” as opposed to allowing it to function on automatic pilot that only lead us (often in circles) along its most trotted pathways.
To get an appreciation of just how powerful visualization can be, consider the powerful impact of the vision shared by Martin Luther King, of a world without discrimination; or, the image of the Biblical Eve and it’s impact on subsequent ‘witch hunts’ of the 14th C or on portraying women as ‘helpers.’
The images in our subconscious are powerful. Many lie dormant and are seldom reviewed, yet they can empower or restrict our experience of confidence and agency.
“We have forgotten the age old fact that God speaks chiefly through dreams and visions,” hypothesized Jung.
Our ability to look at and review our experiences/beliefs with love and compassion, and work towards transforming them, for example through making use of our creativity to visualize ourselves as being transformed in a direction in which we want to develop, can help us in tapping into a deeper sense of security and connection with ourselves and take charge of programming those subconscious drives.
“A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves; a call to become something more.” Rosabeth Mass Cantor.
Consider making use of this well-researched technique, already used by many athletes, in establishing new, desired connections between the body and mind, which help in executing a desired performance or experience.
Consider how you would like to experience your self in the near future and offer to your sub-conscious a gift of another image--of how you would like to see yourself unfold, celebrating your endless journey of becoming…
