Helping One Another - Is Kindness a Dirty Word? 4/15/2004 12:09:46 PM
How many times can you remember someone offering to help you just because it's the nice thing to do? I don't know about you, but I find it rare in these times for people to give of themselves without expecting something in return. I look around and see so many who are only interested in satisfying their own needs, never giving a thought to helping someone else who could benefit from their experience and expertise. Everyone is so busy chasing that gosh-awful buck that all life's perspective is lost. Whatever happened to the good neighbor principle, where people looked out for one another and didn't mind taking the time to help out. As a teenager, I remember cutting my neigbor's lawn or clearing their sidewalk of snow and wouldn't think of accepting money for it, because it was the right thing to do. It was what my Mom and Dad called "good manners." Has this generation lost sight of these golden rules? Are we so immersed in greed that everything we do has to have a monetary reward? I say it's time to stop and think not only of how we can satisy our own basic instincts, but how we can help others from the goodness that our Creator has innately endowed us with.
