First Bloom 7/24/2012 9:55:38 AM
First blooms, first baby's smile, first... whatever! When I glanced out into my backyard this morning I received the most wonderful surprise. The hybiscus plant I had recently planted was loaded with large buds when I bought it, but none of them appeared to be within days of opening. Much to my surprise there was the most glorious flower looking back at me. What a wonderful way to start my day!
This first bloom got me thinking of so many other "firsts" I had experienced during my life. I always smile when I remember the first time I set eyes on the man I have been married to for 39 years.
I'll never forget the first moment I saw my daughter, just seconds after her birth. I'll never forget how she was looking directly into my eyes, with an expression that seemed to say, "So! That's what you look like!"
I remember how hard it was to print the alphabet while staying within the broad lines on the flimsy paper my first grade teacher gave us.
I remember the first time I sang in front of an audieance. I was singing alto to my sister's suprano in Whispering Hope at her elementary school graduation. She had a wonderful voice and I had a, well, all I can say is, it was very far from wonderful. I still wonder what my mother was thinking of when she set that up!
I remember playing a solo on my violen in front of the congregation at the Friend's Church in Long Beach. It's probably too bad that I have such a perfectly pitched ear, because I remember sitting back down in the pew next to my father, and breaking into tears. Poor Daddy! I never did get over hating to play solos, but I loved playing with others.
I could go on and on with this "first" stuff, but I won't. What I do want to do, is comment on all those "second" times. The thing is, I don't remembe any of them! Those first memories are burned into my soul, but so many other memories are just floating around somewhere in the farthest reaches of my brain without giving even a glimpse of themselves.
You know what? I bet a lot of those "seconds" are really special. I just wish I could bring them back!
But that's okay, I guess. They're still in there, along with a life time of other memories. Sometimes, when I let my mind be queit, they perculate out of the darkness, and into the light of memory. And when they do, I rejoice in them, just as much as I rejoice in all of those "firsts."
