Treason:
1. violation of allegiance toward one's country or sovereign, especially the betrayal of one's country by waging war against it or by consciously and purposely acting to aid its enemies.
2. A betrayal of trust or confidence.
specifically : the act of levying war against the United States or adhering to or giving aid and comfort to its enemies by one who owes it allegiance.
I try to stay away from politics because it tends to polarize people, create enemies, and a writer trying to make a living writing his little stories cannot afford to offend anyone. However, in this matter, I must speak up!
I hear a lot of people say, “I support our troops but not our President.” What the hell does that mean? The President (Commander-in-Chief) and our troops are one in the same. What affects one affects the other, you can’t have it both ways!
Any soldier back to the Korean War can tell you. I am a Vietnam Vet and I will tell you that whenever Kerry and his lot got on the news, or Hanoi Jane went to Hanoi, a day or two later we (your troops) caught hell! We didn’t have to watch the news; we could easily judge the activities of ‘Peace Marchers’ by the ferocity and activity of our enemy.
Hello, the enemy has radio and television. They can see the discord in our streets and in our elected officials (who, by the way, take an Oath of Allegiance to our country) and translate it into hope for their effort. That’s treason, pure and simple!
Yesterday I heard the voice of a man who had just lost his son to the current war. Through his cracking voice you could hear the sorrow and the pride, pride that his son’s life had counted for something. And then his voice turned hard as he related the activities of certain government officials who would turn that death into nothing. A meaningless death is a car crash, a drug overdose, or a suicide, they stand for nothing. Any soldier who dies on any battlefield dies for his country, for you and me, and for those thoughtless fools who wage politics with our soldier’s lives!
When we returned from Vietnam to Oakland, CA we had to walk ‘The Gauntlet’, a ten foot wide path with a building on one side and a chain link fence on the other. Hundreds of well-wishers crowded against that fence and pelted us with spit, urine, and the foulest language you can imagine. Why? Because I heeded my country’s call? Two years before I had been a college student who dropped a couple of classes to work more hours to support a wife, and now I am the enemy?
Today’s Military is all-volunteer, men and women who have put their lives on hold or at risk FOR US, YOU and ME! To the dissidents I ask, are you that stupid or shameless that you cannot support them (and our President, one in the same, remember?) wholeheartedly? We are facing an enemy the likes of which we have never seen before! These aren’t North Koreans or North Vietnamese charging us in great numbers, our enemies today are cowards, slipping through our porous borders to plant bombs or fly suicide missions against US! If we don’t fight them in their countries, we will have to fight them in ours, because they are dedicated, to the death, to wipe us from the face of the earth, and they don’t take flowers or American Express!
