America's Enemies

There is merit putting things into perspective

Who are America's enemies? We are reading a lot about Saddam's regime. Did he ever endanger America? Never, in hindsight. We read about Al Quaida, who has killed in spectacular media events some 4000 Americans during the last ten years or so. Any other enemies in sight? Yes, indeed, but nobody seems to take them serious. The big monster enemies are:

(1) Obesity. It kills 400000 American's per year, with a rising trend. Responsible are mainly fastfood chains, feeding customers with addictive hi-calorie, hi-cholesterol food, which is also low in anti-oxydants. A 24 hour McDonald diet causes serious health problems after three weeks only. Elementary schools do little to teach young kids how to feed, and many won't get good guidance from their obese parents.

(2) Smoking and drinking. Another big killer, plus drunk-driving. Studies on rats have shown that nicotine in cigarettes causes only moderate addiction, but other substances (opiates etc) added to tobacco enhance addiction by a factor of ten. And where is the government? Eyes wide shut, I suppose.

(3) Substandard health care. An estimated 50% of children in the wealthy Texan city of Houston do not have any health insurance cover. It is up to the (mainly poor, sometimes analphabetic and mostly illegal) parents to take care of vaccinations. An unsufficient vaccination record is often only recognized at pre-school age.

(4) Inflated prices for prescription drugs.

Some prescription drugs are kept so expensive, that they are out of reach for many customers. I was surprised to pay some $ 100 for the antibiotic Augmentin. The same drug is sold in Europe and Turkey for the equivalent of $ 10.

What can be done? Very little, I'm afraid, as long as the US are governed by people who are firmly embedded in the pockets of special interests groups.
