Where to focus my writing energies? Short story, poems, that novel... Okay, so sitting down at my desk every morning at 10:00 am is no problem. My body is conditioned to get up, eat breakfast, get dressed, get down to work. But lately, I feel as though I'm going in a circle. I need to decide: where will I get the biggest bang for my buck? My novel, a simple love story, creeps along at a steady pace because my fiction writing group demands a chapter from me every once in a while. But, the "numbers" show that my poems have done the best in terms of getting published. Is that because each submission means five poems are being seen? Maybe. The novel is the most time consuming and a long shot in terms of selling it. This sounds like a good argument for focusing on shorter pieces. Don't feel like I have any more poems in me -- for the moment, anyway. The longer the piece, the harder it is to sustain.
