Both of my mother's brothers were in World War II fighting in Germany. My Uncle Same had a friend named Skippy Lordi. The two were inseparable and were fighting under Patton. My other Uncle Frank was a tank driver under Patton as well. Sam and Skippy were fighting in the Ardennes Forest and were being heavily shelled by the Germans. Ground was erupting everywhere. They had to retreat and were literally running for their lives.
Sam found a fox hole and jumped into it. Skippy followed him in. They hunkered down trying to avoid the shelling and the debris. Skippy kept looking at something and Sam finally shouted at him and asked what he was looking at.
"Sam, I just saw my dead grandmother. She motioned me to get out of the foxhole."
"That's crazy," Sam said. "This is the best cover."
They waited a few minutes more and then Skippy moved and scrambled out of the foxhole. Sam hesitated but then followed him. He was about seventy feet away when a shell hit dead center in the hole. Had they stayed they both would have been killed.
