My time-travel action adventure for the younger end of the YA market is now with my editor. November was almost at a close and I was despairing about not having finished the latest version of 'The Taexali Game' manuscript - my time travel novel for the younger end of the YA market. However, late on the 30th November, I typed the last sentence and whooped around the room. I had set myself a target- not a NaNoRiMo whole novel- but a simple target of completing that latest version of the action adventure that was on the writing table. Family commitments have meant very limited writing time this year for new work but I had been working though suggestions made by my editor, Jeff Gardiner, back in February of this year. Some were simple line edits but the most important help given was for major content editing and revamps. His suggestions were absolutely spot-on and extremely perceptive.
On November 30th, it was already something like 9 pm when I finished, so yet another re-read of the whole manuscript wasn't going to happen in November, since it's just short of 80 thousand words. I’m never satisfied, though, unless I do that final re-read but it was going to have to be in December. Although I read quickly, I just don't read quite as quickly as that.
During my thorough re-read I found a small inconsistency - something I'd almost glossed over having made a huge amount of changes to the first edited version of February 2014. That’s why I like to take the time to do that careful re-read.
On the 3rd December, it winged its way across to my editor. I hope that he won't find much wrong with it but I know now that it needs less of a line edit and more of another content edit check. I've implemented a lot of changes that Jeff suggested way back, so I hope I've now done the deeds.
My next task is to contact the cover artist and give him a lovely task!
