I guess that every author in the world employs a slightly different method when it comes to writing a book. While I guess everybody sits in front of a computer these days and taps the keys, i can see where each person's life situation will make the process they use to create their work a little different.
For instance, I am an independent author so I have a full-time job that takes up most of my time. It is rare that I get a chance to write on a weekday evening. Maybe if my wife has gone to visit her sister or I happen to be on vacation that week, will I get a chance to power up the computer and get a few pages in. Ninety nine percent of my writing is done on Saturday and Sunday and mostly before 10:00am. If I wake about 6:00am, I can get a good three or four hours of writing in both days.
Using this method, I have written two books so far and am working on my third. The first two books were completed in a one year time period and the third book looks to be following the same time table.
The process that I have used for the story-line has been the same for all three books. First I have a rough idea for a story I think will be interesting. I document my idea with some notes and a simple outline in WORD. Then I start to think about the characters and the situations they would be placed in. Most of my ideas do not come when I am seated in front of the computer. Almost all of them come while I am doing mundane daily chores... cutting the grass, washing the car, shoveling snow, sitting on my deck cooking chicken on the grill... you get the idea. I saw a quote that said.."Writers are either writing or thinking about what they want to write." Seems to me that statement is true.
