I finished writing my Lincoln County Law Trilogy. It is the story of the arc of change in a rural Southern county from a racist and sexist past to a more hopeful future. In Volume I, a trial attorney fights public opinion and his own family to attempt to overcome the taint of racial prejudice from the potential jury who will sit in judgment of an innocent African American man charged with murder. In Volume II, the constitutionally protected right of personal decision-making is explored. One of the county's most beloved men is forced to come out when he's accused of the murder of his gay lover. Prejudice again raises its ugly head as his lawyer struggles to reach the truth. In Volume III, "Living and Dying in the Rainbow Light," sexism is the theme along with cultural prejudice. I have lived through many of these problems personally during my thirty year career as a trial attorney. Prejudice in the jury pool is one of the more important things affecting the lives of many that is often overlooked. The existence of prejudice against the "other" is often there lurking in places we don't expect it in the everyday lives of most people. Many times it is unnoticed or even unknown to the person carrying it inside. There clearly is a continuum from intentionally biased behavior to unintentional racism or sexism. All of it needs to be overcome by all of us as citizens of a country that was born of the desire to live in a free society.I hope my books provide some insight into these difficult issues as well as an entertaining read.
