After Ike . . . GOOD GRIEF! 9/24/2008 2:35:22 PM
In the aftermath of IKE, it seems that everyone has lost their MINDS! The Gulf Coast area really got a whammy from Ike. It will take a long time to rebuild. Today, September 24, 2008, ten days after our tirade from the disastrous storm, there are still around 250,000 people without lights in the city of Houston. And we're LUCKY compared to the ruin that is now Galveston. Those folks need your prayers. It's so sad to see. The Balinese Room (once a casino) was reduced to toothpicks, as was my favorite restuarant, The Oceanview (it had just recently been bought by Hooters [yuck]). And, of course, the worst part is the number of homes demolished. Most of them are gone, leaving thousands homeless.
My household fared very well. We were only without electricity for about four days, which is a blessing. We actually ENJOYED the storm. A natural disaster was a relief compared to the way our lives had become recently. While the hurricane blew 110 mile per hour winds it got pretty scary, but once we got through the most intense part with no damage to ourselves or our home, and we were left to deal with the situation we were in- we did so with enthusiam, creativity, resourcefulness and ingenuity. It left us all with a new appreciation of each other, and we had a chance to remember what we all mean to each other. Even my dog and cat seem to have a new respect for each other.
However- not everyone has been so lucky. There are many people that are suffering the 90 degree heat with no electricity or water. The discomfort is taking it's toll.
Tempers are flaring. There is a definite "fight or flight" mode among the general population. People are completely disregarding the basic "rules of the road", ignoring traffic lights completely (the ones that actually WORK), and completely ignoring "plan 'B' ", where you treat an intersection with traffic lights out as a four way stop. People are killing each other.
The stores are still not stocked. Shoppers get in fights over supplies. Cars try to cut in front of each other in gasoline lines, and then the fists start flying. I saw one lady ram her SUV into a vehicle whose driver attempted to cut in front of her in line.
I just hope everything settles down soon. I know we will never be the same. I'm just hoping for a new harmony.
