My son goes to elementary school in a very wealthy district. It is inhabited by some of the finest people on earth. However, there are a few parents that transport their children with two things in common - they are nouveau riche, and rude.
They drive these humongous vehicles down narrow roads not geared for them … each wanting to be first in line to pick up their child. They park in spaces clearly marked “illegal”, blocking other cars, always uttering the refrain: “I’ll be right back!”
In the midst of all this chaos is Simeon (a humble immigrant man from Russia), trying to control the flow of traffic in his broken English. Many parents simply ignore him when he speaks. I might add; they neither speak to Simeon nor each other.
Every day, scores of cars converge at the same time. Judging by outward appearances, they are rich. However, judging by behavior, they are miserable human beings … who have forgotten the “Golden Rule.”
One day I approached Simeon, who was sitting at his usual spot, (a large rock) looking overwhelmed and depressed. I introduced myself. Soon we were conversing daily. I found him to be a remarkable individual who came to this country literally penniless … with no knowledge of the language.
Recently, he became a naturalized citizen of this great country and invited me to the swearing in ceremonies. He was ecstatic when he received his citizenship. I know he meant it when he said: “Reggie, I proud to be an American!” Simeon makes me proud to call him friend as he has brought a texture and warmth to my life not experienced beforehand.
He does not work in a white collar job like his employers. In spite of this he has more dignity. He does not make as much money as the people he serves, yet he is the richest person I have ever met … in soul, spirit, and heart.
