I have always taken pride in maintaining a healthy body. When I was a young man working in Denver Colorado, I had an ache in my left elbow. It started to depress me ... which turned into a “Why me?” attitude.
A friend invited me to a local church to hear a motivational speaker. Reluctantly, I went, elbow and all. The presentation was by a seventeen year old girl named Helen. She had been in a skiing accident which left her paralyzed from the neck down.
Helen had an angelic glow about her and spoke for an hour about how God had been good to her by saving her life! While watching her I learned she had to be turned and massaged daily. Even though she could not do most things for herself; she did not focus on that.
Instead, she mentioned (things I had taken for granted) looking at the sunrise, smelling the flowers in her room and praising God for allowing her to see and love her mother and family. To this day I am inspired by her memory. I left that church with my ache no longer a bother.
Joseph Addison once said: “True happiness is of a retired nature, and an enemy to pomp and noise, it arises, in the first place, from the enjoyment of one’s self, and, in the next, from the friendship and conversation of a few select companions.”
The next time you think you have a problem; look at the world around you. Compared to others it could just be a minor ache in the elbow. You might also remember that some of the past wealthiest people in the world are no longer here. Each of them would give every dollar they left here … to trade places with you!
