It’s amazing what a good night’s sleep can do!
The bathroom was through my room, so, through bleary eyes, I watched Roger wander through and heard him grumbling. He was checking his cell. Nothing had changed. I pretended I was asleep.
Two hours later I couldn’t sleep any more. So I took a shower. This woke Roger, so I went outside to have a cigarette and caffeine. We hadn’t bought any coffee yet so it was Coke. I hate Coke in the morning. Roger came out and laughed at me. For the years that we’ve known each other I have always said; “It ain’t morning ‘till its coffee.” He got me!
Sat down on the table and we looked at the rabbits running around and the sun coming over the hills and decided to go to Miss Tracy’s.
Allen had told us about Miss Tracy’s. But first I had to go get a newspaper so we had to go to the Study Butte Mall. I bought a newspaper and some sunglasses. Yesterday’s newspaper. Even though Connection Boy got up at 10.00am today’s newspaper wasn’t happening. That’s Terlingua. Then we had to plan the day. Roger checked his cell and I quietly decided not to throw it in the nearest river. Only because the nearest river was the Rio Grande and had about three inches of water. But, because we were working on Terlingua-ish time we decided to take the ‘river drive.”
It was gorgeous! Superb! And besides that, we liked it.
This is big country! The Rio Grande on the left and Mexico rising hundreds of feet into the air, only twenty feet away. We were awed! Some twenty miles past Lajitas, we realized we were supposed to get back to Allen’s’ party and lunch would be a good idea. So we started driving back. It took a while because we both kept insisting we stop and take photographs. There were just so many. At one point I pulled the car of the road, into a place close to the river. There was a couple from Virginia complaining about how small the river was. I explained about the nine year drought and Roger disappeared. He was busy standing on rocky outcrops and taking pictures. I think by now he had stopped checking his cell. It wasn’t important anymore. This was just too beautiful. Then we stopped in Lajitas with a thirst. It was hot after all.
Strange place, Lajitas. From the front it looks like any Western Town you ever see in a John Wayne movie. Not at all like Terlingua which is a real Texas town. Makes sense when you understand Lajitas has been bought by a dot.com mogul who is now trying to make it into a spa/resort. Probably explains the “Lajitas International Airport” which has no runway. It does have a good painting behind the bar. Wearing very little. Roger and I agreed to have one more beer and try to find her sister. We still hadn’t eaten so we stopped at the “Hungry Javalena” Ah well! I’ve made worse decisions. Then we cleaned up and went up to the Boathouse for the party. Roger gave up and left the cell behind.
