Christmas 12/25/2006 7:37:07 AM
The reason for the season is largely forgotten in the obscene commercialism that occurs in the name of the Lord. When I grew up, no commercial transactions were allowed between December 23 and 28. It was peace and tranquility that reigned. It was a time for family gatherings and celebrate the small children and be reminded that enchantment is a wonderful experience. It was the time when we got to eat food that was never served during the year, but at Christmas. That in itself was Christmas for us. The presents were homemade and did not come from a store. It was a time for renewal knowing we were heading for days with more lightafter winter soltice. Today I refuse to buy into the pagan parts of Christmas of which the commercial Santa Claus is the leading exponent. Derived from the Sinterklaas of Holland who gave children presents on the 5th of December, he has balooned into the commercial behemoth of today. May God forgive us.
