Helping Katrina Victims One Book at a Time
The Romance Studio is running a weekly drawing to help raise money for the Salvation Army and the HSUS (Humane Society) relief efforts to help the victims and animals of Hurricane Katrina. ALL proceeds from this contest go to the Salvation Army and the HSUS (donor's choice) to assist in relief efforts for thousands of displaced families. The deadline is only 3 weeks away, If you know young writers or have contacts with schools or local media, please pass on the following information. Not only do students have an opportunity to win cash, e-book readers, and gift certificates, but they also can be published in an e-book anthology.
EPIC, the Electronically Published Internet Connection, has established a competition to encourage reading and writing among middle school and high school students and to promote e-book literacy in public and private schools.
"The future of e-publishing is in the next generation," Jane Bierce, President of EPIC, said. "As 'the voice of electronic publishing,' EPIC wants to recognize future electronic authors through this contest."
The result of the first annual competition will be the anthology EPIC New Voices 2006 to be published in June 2006. This anthology will include all prize-winning entries as selected by the judges. The grand prize is $100 cash, first place winners in each category will win e-book readers, and second and third place winners will take home $50 and $25 gift certificates, respectively, for e-books. The winners will be announced at the EPIC Conference in San Antonio, Texas in March 2006.
The contest is open to students attending public, private, or home schools anywhere in the world, but all entries must be submitted electronically in English. Students should be in grades 7 through 12 in the US or the equivalent level in the school system of their country. Categories include Short Story (fiction), Poetry, and Essay (nonfiction). Each entrant may submit no more than one (1) entry in each category a maximum of three (3) entries per entrant. Entries in each category will be judged by a panel of three judges, including teachers, librarians, and published writers.
EPIC, the Electronically Published Internet Connection, is a professional organization for published and contracted e-book and print authors.
