Their Faces Were Gone But Not Missed--an awful lot 5/1/2006 11:38:18 AM
It was refreshing to see a more natural mix of people in the work place. I enjoyed seeing a different set of smiles. Now don't get me wrong. There are some great Hispanic people that I see on a daily basis. Some are smiling, in fact many have great dispositions and are happy types that you tend to like. It's just that it has become such an overwhelming majority of Spanish speaking people (it's like they have their own enclave, never having to speak English) in the parking lot at Walmart or at Home Depot or in the stores.
I think that's it. They never accepted America. They brought Mexico to America and staked out their part of their territory. Legal or Illegal, if they had just learned English and grabbed America and made themselves Americans instead of carving a piece of America out and putting the stamp of Mexico on it. When people come to America, they make the home country second and make America first. The Mexicans never have learned that lesson.
So it was pleasant today, May 1, when I parked at Home Depot and walked through the parking lot and saw a lot of white and black faces but very few brown faces. In the store it was the same. It was a genuine pleasure. Yes, it was slow checking out, but the new check-out lady was learning fast. She asked a lot of questions and the crows feet crinkled at the edges of her blue eyes as she smiled. I think she was enjoying her new job.
It was pretty much the same story over at Walmart's. By the time I finished checking out at the slow line there, it was time to check McDonalds. There were two Hispanic girls working there and a lot of blue-eyed girls and black-skinned men working there instead of the normal Hispanic crew. They all seemed to be having fun. There were a couple of Hispanic men customers, but other than that, a dearth of Hispanics. All in all, I have to say it was a pleasurable mix.
I don't know what the ILLEGALS plan to show by their demonstration, but if it is that they might be missed, they hit their mark, and it was thoroughly enjoyed.
