In the TV movie "A Charlie Brown Christmas" that aired in the late 60s Charlie Brown complained about the overwhelming materialism that he saw amongst everyone during the Christmas season, Lucy suggested that he become director of the school Christmas paegent. Charlie Brown accepted, but it proveed to be a frustrating struggle. When an attempt to restore the proper spirit with a forlorn little fir Christmas tree failed, he needed Linus' help to learn what the real meaning of Christmas is.

Some of you may be old enough to remember when aluminum Christmas trees were all the rage. They came with a motorized wheel with five different colors on the cover. When it rotated those colors shone on the tree. It goes without saying that it would be dangerous to string lights on an aluminum tree. My children's father bought one of those trees. When he assembled it my son just sat in a corner and frowned then proclaimed that it wasn't a "real" tree. Later that day that little boy walked blocks to the nearest Christmas tree lot where he spent his allowance on a crooked three foot tree that had no more than five or six tired looking branches on it. Then he decorated it with anything he could find such as toy cars of his, playing cards he punched holes in and strung with ribbon, a strand of unused Christmas lights, tinsel, and popcorn his sisters help him string. When his father saw it he said, "You call that a tree son? It's nothing more than a few spindly branches." Our son's reply was, "If it's good enough for Charlie Brown, it should be good enough for us." Both trees stayed. The Charlie Brown tree turned out to be everyone's favorite, the gifts ended up being placed under it, we gathered around it on Christmas morning, and the aluminum one was donated to the Good Will the day after Christmas.
