How Was My Valentine's Day?
2/16/2009 2:15:57 PM

These are letters I sent to a dear friend who suggested I post them here.

A DMS truck pulled up outside a few minutes ago and the delivery man handed me the biggest bouquet of red roses I've ever seen and one white gardenia (my favorite flower) atop the bow. Tucked into a lovely bowl holding them is a five-pound box of chocolates, and an adorable teddy bear holding a bottle of Mums champagne. There is no card but I know darned good and well they're from my previous significant other who has been Emailing me the last few days. The arrangement is so large I couldn't see the delivery man's head behind it when I opened the screen door. In fact, he had one heckuva time getting it through the door and setting it on the dining room table. As he was leaving he said, "Someone must love you very much." I'm feeling very special right now. Odd how we forget all the past hurts when someone does something as thoughtful as he did.

It was nice while it lasted. Early this morning a man knocked on the door and said, "Hope I didn't wake you but I need to get home before my sister wakes up." I looked at him in what I'm sure was a suspicious way. He then went on to say, "I live here too, down the street aways, and I saw a truck pull up to your place yesterday with a large bouquet of roses. I'm wondering - I live with my sister and she was expecting a Valentine's present from her fiance. Imagine, 68 and getting married again. Well, anyway, her present never arrrived. Her boyfriend called late last night, too late to bother you, and told her he'd sent something for her by DMS. Did you get something that might not belong to you? It would have been roses and candy and wine and a white gardenia. They're going to have roses and gardenias at their wedding next month." I was flabbergasted. I pointed to the arrangement on the dining room table which he rushed towards, picked up (spilling water on the table I might add, and then continuing to dribble water across the carpet as he raced for the door.) Then he yelled over his shoulder as he almost fell down the front stairs, "Thanks a lot. Have a good day. My sis is going to be so happy." Thank the powers that be that I didn't dig into that box of chocolates. I almost put the champagne in the frig but didn't want to spoil the arrangement. At least for part of yesterday, and all of last night my humble dwelling smelled like a field of roses. I should write a novel about my true-life experiences but I doubt if anyone would believe them.
