Blogs by Joyce E Bowling Tuesday Morning in the Mountains... 6/10/2008 3:43:27 AMI'm enjoying the fragrance of the mountains this morning, one of my favorite fragrances...the scent that comes after a spring rain. We were blessed with some wonderful showers last night and a few heavy rounds of loud rolling thunder storms. Thankfully...it wasn't the kind of storms that are damaging, but the kind that allows one to sleep peacefully knowing who is still in charge! As I took a short walk around the farm this morning I was even more thankful for the rain last night, as the gardens seem to be more vibrant than ever, and the once parched ground seems to be revived! I am also thankful for electricity today...as the majority of the day yesterday was spent without electicity due to damage caused by some type of accident a couple of miles from our house the accident resulted in the breaking of a major electric pole. The repair work took six or seven hours which resulted in the loss of electricity for those living close! For me, it was a chance to catch up on reading from books instead of the computer, a little garden work...but not much as the heat was terrible yesterday, and a chance to actually write with pen and paper...but even though I was able to work on some of the things that I enjoy...I missed having electricity! It also makes me even more appreciative this morning...I am very glad for the convenience of electricity and water today! Yeah, I said water! You see, we have a well on our farm and the pump runs on...yeah electricity! So we were not only without electricity, television, and telephone, but we were also without water! Dennis had a hard time getting ready for work, he had already worked in the garden for a while before realizing the electricity was off...and was in need of a shower! This is a great advantage of living on a rural farm with no visable neighbors! He took his swimming trunks, soap, wash cloth, towel and shampoo and walked up to the creek to our swimming hole as we call it! He was ready for a swim/bath! The swimming hole is actually a small four foot pond that is very shaded, secluded, and wonderful place to relax/swim and enjoy the relaxing waters and serenity with no neighbors at all, unless you count the squirrels, birds, or deer! I think this is called adventure bathing...and also what I would call dedicated! Many people would have simply called in to work, stating they had no electricity and spent the day at home! Not my Den! I might have called in or went to a relatives house to bath, because I'm not too thrilled with the idea of swimming or bathing in the swimming hole as it is known for an occasional water snake! I am a country girl at heart, love the outdoors, gardens, riding through the hills, taking care of the lawn, farm animals, and fishing...but I don't like spiders and snakes...especially snakes! Reminds me of that old song that I grew up with! Anyway...doing without a few of the luxeries that we've grown much accustomed to does make one appreciate them a bit more! Just a few thoughts this morning from this country girl who is enjoying the days of summer vacation...not traveling as gas is too expensive, but enjoying the serenity of the farm writing, reading, gardening, working around the house, watching HGTV and the Food Network, relaxing, going to church, ebaying, cooking, and spending time with her family! Hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed week of good health, love, laughter, peace, and a satisfaction that comes from living a full and well rounded life making the most of every minute that we are given....blessings to all!
