The purpose of poetry 9/7/2007 8:49:43 AM
This was my big realization of what poetry is and it's purpose. I knew it was to basically put life into your own words but this is a little more in-depth.
Many say that poetry is pretty words formed into a song-like dance, on paper. After spending time with my boyfriend and listening to him. I came up with a conclusion. I have to tell you what he said first, though. He said something like: “Ever think about a moment and how you can't say all the thoughts and feelings that come to you in that moment?"
That got me thinking. There has to be a way to express exactly what you are thinking and feeling in a moment, no matte what it its.
I believe that is the true purpose of poetry. Think about it. A poem is written to tell the world what you think. But poetry is the most revealing form of the written word. Others pick up on subtle things that the reader was not aware of. These subtleties, and the text itself, form, in the reader, a sense of being in that moment. As they read, their minds and bodies are flooded with the feelings of the writer. This lets the writer express all they were feeling in the moment where they lost their words.
