Blogs by Joyce E Bowling Christmas in the Mountains... 12/25/2009 4:37:54 AMAs I sit here in the quiet of my kitchen with beginning preparations of Christmas dinner underway...I can't help but count my blessings. I too have ups, downs, troubles, and sorrows...but each morning that I wake and rise to meet the day I am thankful, for life is a gift. Things have been very hectic and a bit strange the past two weeks. The holidays in first grade are wonderful, as my students being six/seven years old are at a prime age when the magic of Christmas still fills their hearts as well as the appreciation of the true meaning of Christmas. I enjoyed every day that I spent with my students making Christmas ornaments to take home, reading The Christmas Story to them, writing Santa letters...and one of the funnest activities with first grade is writing the return letters to the students from "Santa" they arrive by my email, each personalized for the student and answering the questions that they ask in their letters. I love the look of amazement as each letter is read aloud to the class. For instance, this year one of my students ask for an I-pod touch...they were amazed when Santa told them that he had only gotten his I-pod touch this year from Mrs. Claus and he loved it! So from Santa letters, checking the naughty and nice list from Santa.com all the way to reading The Christmas Story and discussing the birth of Jesus and opening gifts, it was a wonderful Christmas in our classroom! The weather took a turn for winter on the last Friday we were at school...I had Bethany, Noah, and JOzie with me that day due to their car being totaled. Another reason that I count blessings this morning. She and her entire family wrecked a few weeks ago, and totaled their car, but by the guiding hand of God and his grace no one was hurt! Anyway, on our way home after school and being filled with Christmas spirit as we had an awesome Christmas program that day at school, rain begin to fall, then quickly it became sleet, and then very large snow drops began to fall...covering the roads very quickly. Quickly we stopped at the bank, picked up meds, and a few groceries just in case we were to recieve the twelve inches of snow the forecast was giving. Finally, we made it home and with good timing as the ground was now covered in a blanket of snow and ice. Den was hours past his regular time getting home due to impassible roads, trees down, and ice covered roads. Finally, when he made it home the electricity went off and we didn't recieve electric back until nearly three days later. I was and am still thankful for our fireplaces and a gas grill. We were warm, fed, and our family had a quick lesson on how families existed and entertained themselves without television. We played games, worked puzzles, told stories and read books. All in all I can't complain about not having electricity, as we had water, food, heat and each other. Quality time that was great as we prepared for Christmas at home. My sister and I went and spent the afternoon with our mom on Wednesday and enjoyed quality time with her opening gifts and savoring the moments of the season. Yesterday I made appetiziers and finger foods for my family and everyone came over to our house to eat and open gifts from each other to allow each child time at home today with their own families. We went to my mother inlaws house last night and spent time with Den's family enjoying watching everyone open gifts and recalling Christmas' of the past. So here I am today up early enjoying the lights of our Christmas trees through the house, Christmas cartoons, good coffee and the smell of turkey in the oven. I am expecting the kids & grandbabies, along with my sister and her family, and my mom this afternoon for Christmas dinner and family time that I will cherish. Yes, life isn't perfect as we have those unexpected incidents that invade our lives...wrecks, loss of jobs, loss of electricity, sickness, deaths, sorrows, and trials...but we have breath in our bodies and hope for today and tomorrows! Faith, hope, love, family, and life...what wonderful Christmas gifts. Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas from the mountains of Kentucky this beautiful Christmas morning....
