Plagues of Egypt

Wednesday night there was a rather eyebrow raising moment when I mentioned to the congregants that a plague of locust was currently rising out of Egypt moving towards Israel. Here's a web site that refers to the news story: http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/04/17185324-locust-swarm-of-biblical-proportions-strikes-egypt-israel-before-passover?lite (Thanks to Brent Humphries for finding sending it to me). Of course, we just so happened to be studying the ten plagues of Egypt. The specific plague we were tackling was the plague of locusts. I have been relating how there are types and shadows from the Old Testament that are study guides for us to understand how God works. The New Testament tells us that all those Old Testament stories and events that happened to the people of Israel were for our benefit in terms of learning about the Kingdom of God. In this case, a simple glance at the the plagues reveals to us that Egypt is a type of the world, Israel is a type of the church, Pharaoh is a type of Satan, and Moses is a type of Jesus, the deliverer. You get the point. I have been trying to illustrate that the lessons of Egypt's plagues teaches us much in these last days: Now, as then, God is not trying to punish His people--we are not appointed unto wrath--but is preparing this world for the final wrath to come in what Revelations calls the seven vials of wrath. The closer we get to the rapture of the church and the pouring out of those vials of wrath the more the signs of the time should be shaking God's children to repent and look up for their redemption is drawing near. The world is in turmoil on every level: Geo-politically, financially, morally, and physically (demonstrated by the "once-in-a-life-time" storms and calamities we've witnessed in these last couple years). As we know the world will not repent of its wickedness but continue to pursue material wealth unabated, we also know God's children must learn to trust in God to make it through these dark days with our faith intact. When I mentioned the locust news last night, I could see it happening in the people there. Eyes widened; people sat up in their pews, leaning in to hear better; they begin asking questions. Hmm. Maybe these boring lessons on the Plagues of Egypt are actually making an impact. I guess it always helps when God gives us real-life illustrations/demonstrations.
