What Do You Believe?

What do you believe? Well, that's a loaded question. You believe a whole lot of things. Or maybe you don't believe much at all. The better question is this: In Whom do you believe? If you follow Jesus, if you are committed to the God of the Bible, if you are born again, I know exactly what you believe. I can't speak for followers of Mohammed, Buddha, Mammon, or Secularism, but I have followed Jesus for at least four decades; I know what we believe. I find it strange, however, when Christians appear to be so divided on things. The enemy uses division, confusion, and doubt to undermine our purpose and mission on this earth. Usually, division comes when Christians argue about what the Bible teaches: when theology turns into "my opinion" on theology. When some hard truth interferes with some Christian's ideals, concepts, morals, or world view, often that individual will rationalize, piece together scripture out of context, or simply assault the validity of the Bible itself before changing and conforming into the image of Christ. If you are a follower of Jesus, the Bible is your indisputable world view. It answers all question; it gives you clarity in your mission and purpose; it is inspired by God and is your daily touchstone on your path to Glory. Yet, out of ignorance or arrogance, some supposedly born again Christians dispute their own touchstone: their own user's manual. The result: confusion! I'm still amuse when remembering a conversation I had with a Satanist once. In our exchange, I kept saying "Well, the Bible says..." this or that. Finally, frustrated by my use of the Bible as a foundation for my positions, the Satanist said, "Well I don't even believe in your God or your Bible." I immediately started chuckling. Confused by my laughter, he asked me "What's so funny?" I told him how ridiculous it was for him to believe in Satan, who is character from the Bible, if he didn't even believe in the Bible or the God of the Bible. I guess he had never seen the contradiction. What frustrates me is when people who claim to follow Jesus fail to see the contradictions in their own actions and beliefs according to the Word of God. Or worse, when they are confronted with a contradiction, rationalize away the truth of God. You can believe whatever you want to: it is your God-given right. Your opinion in the public square is as valid as anybody's opinion. However, when you give your life to Jesus you become His ambassador: you speak for Him and His Kingdom. Your opinions must conform to those of the Bible, or you become an author of confusion.
