Rebecca was nervous about going to work at the secret place in East Tennessee, but deep down she felt like it was the right thing to do for herself, and for Billy, her sweetheart who had died so soon after enlisting. They said the work there could help win the war. She didn't know much more than that.
In those war years young people and their families had their lives turned upside down. In real life at a secret place in East Tennessee many people like Rebecca stepped outside their comfort zones to make a difference.
In writing "The Job," one of three war-time short stories in The Patriotic Connection - Life and Love in the Forties, I wanted to bring to life a few fictional characters who represent ordinary people who rocked for the right reasons.
