Meet other authors! Back in October, I was offered a contract from Black Opal Books to publish my memoir, "Who Am ?." I can't even describe how I felt when I signed that contract. It still feels pretty unreal like I'm in a dream and I do NOT want to wake up. A little over a month ago, I joined the world of social media to promote myself because whether or not I like it, I'm a brand now. I was already on Facebook but I also joined Twitter, Linkedin and Goodreads. I was opened to a whole new world. (Cue the music from Aladdin.)
I am so overwhelmed by how supportive the writing world is with everyone. I was welcomed with open arms even though my book hasn't even hit the shelves yet. I've gotten compliments on my blog, questions about my book and my first interview scheduled for January 24. No matter which social media website I joined, I was an instant friend. Everyone just wants to help everyone else…and it's completely genuine.
See, writers know that now matter how well-known we are or might become, each new piece of writing is our new baby and we want everyone to love it as much as we do. That's why even though we might be labeled as "authors," we also wear a "marketing" hat at the same time. Whether we are self-publishers or have publishers or agents that market for us, we will still do anything we can to help get each other's names out to the masses.
I like to use Mitch Albom as an example. (Yes, I'm from Michigan so I'm biased.) I grew up reading Mitch Albom's articles in the paper. Along with everyone else, I loved "Tuesdays with Morrie." It still is one of my top ten favorite books. Since his first book debut, Mitch has gone on to become a NY Times best-selling author. He recently released a new book, "The First Phone Call from Heaven." Even though he is a well-known, best-selling author, Mitch held book signings at local bookstores, malls and a couple of Art Van Furniture Stores (which are popular here in the Detroit area.) Why? Because he wants to promote his book. He wants to connect with his readers. He loves what he does. And even though I'm one of many of his fans, he inspires me.
So to do my little part in the world of marketing, I am introducing "Authors Supporting Authors" on my blog. Twice a week, I will post interviews with authors who come from all over the world, are established in the writing community or just getting started. These authors have publishers, agents or are self-published. And because I love reading ANY genre, I want to include everyone. Everyday, I will post an interview with an author from my "Authors Supporting Authors" series. These authors are not just promoting themselves or their book, they are also opening up about their writing, their passions and their inspirations.
