So Many Questions 1/15/2014 12:32:06 PM
I have a million questions everyday as to why my daughter Madelyne does what she does. I am the youngest in my family (well, until Madelyne) so I didn't grow up around children. I actually didn't even hold a baby for the first time until I was 22. The first diaper I ever changed was my daughter's in the hospital. This whole baby/toddler/kid thing is so new to me and I feel like I'm always wondering about stuff that kids do. So just for fun, I followed Madelyne around yesterday with a notebook and wrote down the many questions I ask myself everyday. Maybe some of you out in cyberspace can help demystify toddler behavior for me.
1. Why does she yell "no" every morning when I put her on the potty? At some point, is she going to get tired of wet diapers? Why does she still run to the corner to go poopsie in her pants? Why won't she go poopsie on the potty?
2. Why is Thomas the Train so interesting? These trains remind me of little kids. They are always getting in trouble. How does anything ever get done on the Island of Sodor?
3. I'm annoyed with Curious George after five minutes. Why doesn't she get tired of the constant monkey sounds?
4. Why is my kid already a back seat driver? She tells me to "stop at red lights" and "go at green lights." She's also pointed out the couple of times I've done "rolling stops" through stop signs. One time there was a police car and she said the police are going to get me.
5. Why is it so easy to put her down for a nap but it's like pulling teeth at bedtime? (More about bedtime later.)
6. Why does she pick her nose and then eat it? Why do kids do that? Are boogers yummy? Am I missing something here?
7. Why does she use her fingers to eat yogurt at dinner instead of her spoon? She starts off using her spoon but then puts it down and uses her fingers.
8. Just when I think Madelyne might be slowing down for the night, she's like a wind-up doll that's completely wound-up again. She has to run laps around the house. When I tell her to slow down, she says she can't because she has so much energy. From what?
9. Why does she want to eat Mac and Cheese for every meal?
10. Why does she scream when it's time for a bubble bath…and then she screams when she has to come out of the bath tub? Either she likes the bath or she doesn't. I can't tell from the screaming.
11. Why does she tell me every night that she is not going to sleep? I even tried reverse psychology on her. When she told me she wasn't going to sleep, I told her she could stay awake all night. She countered me by telling me that she will stay up all night because she is nocturnal. I'm not sure if I should be proud of her because she uses big words or scared because she's probably already smarter than me.
12. Why does she think I'm a human jungle gym/trampoline/foam pit?
