This post focuses on the importance of reading comprehension among children. Last week I created a blog post on the importance of teaching children to love reading. The general basis of the article focused on how opening children up to creative writing and figurative language can potentially create a passion and appreciation for the love of reading.
This week, I have chosen to continue on this theme and write a small post about reading comprehension. Reading comprehension, in short, is the level of understanding of specific text in a book, magazine, newspaper or any other text document. The understanding of the text is derived directly from the words written and assists the reader in retaining knowledge. For young children, reading comprehension is important because it provides knowledge of specific subject material. This, in turn, can be applied to tests, to tasks in the work force and to life in general. Not having this basic skill can be detrimental, negatively affecting job performance and the ability to succeed.
