I usually have two companions on my early morning four mile jaunt.
Today I was alone- an opportunity for some reflection.
I was diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer a few months ago. The doctor recommended intense radiation to get ahead of it. I am now almost finished with my radiation treatments- 38 down and 4 to go.
They have piled up a bit and kinda sapped my energy a little. I had to push to keep my usual pace.
And then I remembered a group of folks who were part of the early years of American history; who really knew what it was to be weary andsore to the bone.
Share choppers who worked long hours under the hot sun for little to no pay.
I see them gathered around a camp fire late at night wondering how they would make it for one more day. Then I remembered the words of one of their beautiful old spirituals.
"Make every day a Holy day.
Make every important decision worthy of a child of God.
Make every relationship sacred and blessed."
Thinking of their example, I feel energized, liberated.
And filled with the same Spirit that filled them, making it possible for them to face another day...
His.
