My God is a singing God, and I am challenged each day to find and sing songs that support and encourage me on my daily journey.
In the early seventies I marched with many in support of an Open Housing Bill in Milwaukee. As we marched, we sang:
"O freedom
O freedom,
And before I'll be a slave,
I'll be buried in my grave,
And go home to my Lord,
AND BE FREE."
This day I begin by claiming the freedom God grants as a gift...and as I accept the responsibility that accompanies this gift I pray God's freedom will spread to all His children that together our actions will sing ... O FREEDOM
I recently watched the movie “25 Years a Slave” and recall a spiritual which must have been sung by enslaved field workers.
“I want Jesus to walk with me.
I want Jesus to walk with me.
All along my pilgrim journey, Lord
I want Jesus to walk with me.”
I sing this as I walk my daily four miles up and down hills, and the day seems full of possibilities and opportunities because I will not be alone.
My first trip to the altar at youth camp to dedicate my life to full time Christian service:
"Are ye able said the Master,
To be crucified with me
And heroic spirits answer -
Lord, we are able."
By myself I lack the strength to do all that could be done in the name of the Lord, but with God’s hand in mine, ability becomes life changing.
A tender, poignant question from child to parent:
"Here I am Lord.
Is it I Lord?
I have heard You calling in the night
I will go Lord
If You lead me
I will hold Your people in my heart."
Make this day a time to will God to lead us.
“Nevertheless not my will, but Your Will be done.”
I often think of “Day By Day” from the Broadway show "Godspell." So powerful.
"Day by day, O dear Lord, three things I pray
To see Thee more clearly
Love Thee more dearly
Follow Thee more nearly, day by day."
Sounds like a great agenda for today. The focus is beyond myself, both in the direction of Whom I follow and in the manner in which I live out that following.
Then there is a bold declaration of faith:
"Where He leads me I will follow.
I’ll go with Him,
With Him
All the way.”
I was in Preservation Hall in New Orleans. The year was 1972 - the band started playing this great spiritual -over and over they played - and we started singing - 15 minutes - tears flowing as a most Holy moment occurred in a most unexpected place.
My goal today is to be lead before I start leading.
And a beautiful declaration of the love of God:
"Amazing Grace
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost
But now am found
Was blind but now I see."
How better to start the day than with the reminder that it is a new day with a fresh start- and this because of a gracious God whose very Spirit is forgiveness.
Our God is a singing God, whose inspires our souls to sing.
