There's more to a book than just words 4/25/2017 11:50:28 PM
Today I was thinking about sounds. A blackbird was singing this morning before it was even light, and it reminded me of the noise that a recognisable character makes, R2D2. The similarity is extraordinary. All star wars fans should agree; if they were to listen carefully to the song of the favourite garden bird, then they would all surely agree; the resemblance is uncanny.
It then got me thinking about the sounds within my book; what kind of sounds could I pick out as I went about my daily life that could inspire me to include as a descriptive part of writing about 'alien' sounds? I've used the words 'screeching' and 'droning', but can these words fully express and explain the sounds I am trying to portray within my sci-fi books?
I want to write in such a way that the reader can not only imagine and picture in their minds the scene on each page, but can also hear the sounds and the voices of the characters within the story, whether they be human, alien or robot.
I will now pay more attention to sounds as I venture outdoors, or even as I sit quietly at home, because sounds are really important and can bring life to any book. Keep listening!
