Holidays are periodic times in our lives when we have time to relieve our stress and replenish our energy. Students work all year round with almost no time to relax or get with their friends and family because there’s so much academic work to be done.
A holiday in the midst of all that stress is always a miracle no one can afford to miss. It’s an opportunity to meet up with family members who you haven’t seen in a long time, catch up with your friends, hang out and have fun and lots of that.
The excitement of the period might become so overwhelming that all you can think of is jetting out of your dorm or your off-campus apartment and getting onto the next available flight.
As exciting as all these seem to be, you definitely would not like to get back to school and discover that half or all of your valuables have been carted away by burglars. Most of these apartments are basically left empty when everyone goes home for the holidays, making them an easy target for thieves.
To avoid such unfortunate situation, don’t get caught up in all that holiday frenzy, slow down a bit and consider these 5 ways to keep your student property safe during the holidays.
1. Leave the lights on
Leaving a light or two on in your apartment suggests someone might just be home so to keep your properties safe while away for the holidays, leave a light on, or a lamp. It’s advisable to set an automatic timer to it so it just goes on and off at specific periods of the day.
2. Hide your belongings
Some students like to travel light; they just take the needful and leave the rest back at school. If that is you then it’s okay. Just make sure you hide whatever is left of your valuables so you don’t put them at the risk of being noticed by a peep through the window.
You can hide some under the carpet or underneath the bed or wherever you think is hidden and deep enough.
3. Take belongings with you
Maybe you’re not too comfortable with the idea of leaving your belongings behind (which is totally understandable), you can just take them with you instead.

4. Keep your keys carefully
It’s very important that you keep your keys out of reach, so someone intrusive doesn’t gain entrance into your apartment while you’re away.
Do not keep it in conspicuous or usual areas such as underneath the doormat or in mailboxes. You should probably take it with you or keep it with a very trusted neighbour.
5. Put a neighbour on watch
This is another effective way to secure the safety of your property till you return from the holidays. Not everybody enjoys observing the holidays. For some students, it’s just another avenue to study some more and this time, without the noise coming from various dormitories or other off-campus apartments.
If there’s anyone like this around you, you could ask the person if they could help keep an eye on your apartment and alert you if there’s any sign of suspicious movement.
You could also give them permission to go in and out of the room to make it seem like someone is in there.
