Discrimination of Registering and Voting Recent elections in South Carolina and Georgia, remind me of the fight that Blacks suffered in the not too distant past. Blacks are still subjected to discrimination when registering and voting. Some examples, but not limited to are as follows – 1) legislators changing the requirements for people registering to vote; 2) registration forms being lost; and 3) poll workers using subtle forms of intimidation.
What are these subtle forms of discrimination for people registering to vote? For example, people needing 2-3 forms of identification to vote. In South Carolina, an elderly black woman was asked for a photo I.D. She produced what was requested, and then was asked for a driver’s license. She didn’t have one because she never drove. As a result, she could not vote.
Another example, in Georgia, purportedly over 86,000 persons registered, many of which were people of color, couldn’t vote because their registration forms had been lost. If this loss hadn’t occurred, the outcome of the election might have been different.
Lastly, registrar of voters and poll workers use various forms of intimidation. A person of color goes to a polling place and told they cannot vote there instead of the worker saying, “your polling precinct has changed.”
