In Vandevere by Linda Guyan, Audrey Wyler can talk to the dead, or rather, they talk and she listens. As part of her historian job, she is drawn to Vandevere cemetery, where a new soul is calling out to her, asking for her help. Meredith Hayden died fifty years ago, murdered by her kidnapper who confessed and died in prison, being buried in Potters Field. But now doubt has been cast – was he the real murderer or just the fall guy for someone else? Together with Jake, the man she meets in the cemetery and comes to marry, Audrey enlists the help of Arlo Skinner, the ex-police chief responsible for arresting the murderer fifty years ago. As more details come to light, some surprising information emerges, not just about the murder but about the families of Jake and Audrey. Was the right man sent to trial for Meredith’s murder or is there another suspect, one that might just still be alive?
Vandevere by Linda Guyan is something very different, a paranormal tale, and one that spans more than fifty years. It begins in the past, laying the groundwork that leads to the story of the present, and runs to a natural conclusion. This was a well-written story, all go right from the very first page, with characters written to fit the story well. My only complaint is that it was a bit short. I found that it bounced around too much, missing out what seemed like years of the story. I felt that it would have been better if it had been a longer tale. That said, I did enjoy it very much, and didn’t put it down from when I started it to the finish. I found Vandevere by Linda Guyan to be an interesting and captivating read.
