Americans were tuned into Prince Harry and Megan Markle's wedding. Have we forgotten why America fought for independence? I didn't watch the Royal Wedding. I was working that day but I wouldn't have watched it if I could. The reason why, I don't give two stuffs about the Royal Family. I thought that many Americans would feel the same as me, however, a many don't. In the Sunday papers, I saw pictures of Americans all around the country glued to their TV sets watching the wedding and all I could think was: "Have they forgotten their history?"
Growing up American, I had years of how the American people rose up against oppression by a king, (I know in reality it was the British Parliament levying all those taxes on the colonies but that's not the point here), kicked out those whom they felt were symbols of that oppression and formed an independent republic, pounded into my head in history lessons. That is why the US Constitution forbids bestowing any titles of nobility. Therefore, watching a symbol of monarchy goes against what I was taught in school. However, it seems that many Americans have forgotten all that and fawn and coo about this wedding. While, I have nothing but kind thoughts for Harry and Megan, I don't want to watch their wedding nor did I. It goes against everything our founding fathers stood for. I bet George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock and many others who drafted and fought for the Declaration of Independence are spinning in their graves.
