Historical fiction is a popular genre, but I wonder how much history is actually taught in schools these days. I ask because we are quiz show addicts and it's surprising - and not a little disturbing - to see how little knowledge even very clever people seem to have about their past.
History, if taught at all, seems to concentrate on a few fashionable topics and episodes, leaving whole swathes of the past a blank. Although history never repeats itself, I would have thought we should have some idea of what went on before in order to properly navigate the future.
I am coming to the end of my first month of occasional blogs for Authors Den, but it seems I'm writing into empty space. If anyone has read this or previous blogs, please let me know, otherwise there is no point in continuing.
