I'm just back from seven weeks on a cruise ship, then flying home from Sydney via Singapore. The big topic is of course the Corona virus, which is devastating the tourist trade, so here are some thoughts on it.
As one of the supposed virus hot-spots, we were concerned about having three days in Singapore, but need not have worried. The airport and hotel had thermal imaging scans to pick up anyone with a temperature, but that apart life went on as normal. A few more people (maybe 5%) wearing face masks, but that was all.
Winter is always the season for flu, which normally has a mortality rate of about 1%, mostly amongst the elderly. Corona is apparently slightly worse, with a mortality rate of about 2%, so nothing to get fussed about, yet the world is now in full panic mode, shutting up shop, hunkering down into the bunker. The cure is doing far more damage than the illness.
In China about 2,000 more people have died out of a population of 1.3 BILLION. Wake up world! Take sensible precautions, but stop this absurd panic!
